Wow, doubleg! thanks for that wonderful information, source and and words. I never knew them before! But I know it's older, like me. I give my age away by telling you that I was in the 8th grade at a boarding school next to West Point in Highland Falls in 1943-44, and that's where and when I heard it, from the football games and cadets who rode the bus (wartime) with us to NY every weekend. So it must be earlier, since it's from the operetta "The Vagabond King". Thanks so much! (Oreste??)

@ruthiebelle1 - It wasn't Nelson Eddy. It was Oreste Kirkop (I know, who is that?) in "The Vagabond King" with Kathryn Grayson. The song started out 'Sons of toil and danger, wiil you serve a stranger, and bow down to Burgundy?' It was a movie about the Duke of Burgundy trying to stop Louis the 11th of France from joining all of France under one flag. .
Sons of Slum and Gravy was one of my favorite fight songs. The movie was in 1956, so this Army fight song came out around then.

Good to hear that again! It's based on an operatta song that I heard Nelson Eddy sing - not sure which operetta, the the last line is "And to hell with Burgundy!"
Wish I could hear that too.
BTW, After almost 70- years, I finally figured out what "slum and gravy" means!
