Leyla Gencer in a live performance of Aida in the spectacular setting of the Arena di Verona. Conducted by Franco Capuana. Her singing, while sometimes vocally imperfect, is exciting and emotional. One can see why the "Turkish Diva" was so beloved in Italy. They don't make them like this any more.

She was a lirico-spinto soprano. She did not force her mid-weight lyric voice but used her natural ability to sing dramatic roles. She was one of the best Lady Macbeths, as well. You can't sound so dramatic and sing more than 40 years by forcing your voice...

i like this much than maria's version. gencer's voice was more suitable to Aida's tenderness. soft, dramatic, powerful, ut not forced..though i am fond of maria too.

There were, are and will be better singers and actors than Gencer. She was always an average singer, nth special. Could be because of her not being able to cope with her lyrico voice and trying to force it in order to sound dramatic. Nice to listen to her on youtube, but I never bought or will buy her recordings.
