National Geographic Traveler contributing editor Andrew Evans is traveling from Washington D.C. to Antarctica by bus, but he had to hitch a ride with the National Geographic Sea Lion in order to cross the Darién Gap. Here, he gives us a tour of his room. • I'm not the only one who loves maps. I can't wait to visit Antarctica next year. I hope you loved this trip. : )

  • @Y0ssariantheAssyrian Not when I was out there. I thought I would see the most amazing sky I'd ever seen. But nope. Just pitch black. There were two nights in which the moon was red though. Haha.

  • What a cozy little cabin i'd love to snuggle up in there and read all day :)

  • @Ethyogptn

    no stars?

  • I have been on cruises and spent 20 years in the Navy; being on a cruise ship and a military ship are very different experiences. The only common denominator is the beauty of the open sea. It is a wonderful experience to look out and see nothing but ocean and sky, however it can be stressful driving a ship at night and being watchful not to hit something.

  • repent the end is near

  • @luanatic: Depends on the individual person. I did it, too, and all I needed was a balcony, good music, and a good book and I was set. Let's not forget that food is always available so you never actually have to do anything for yourself. Pretty relaxing, if you ask me. But it's always better when you have something like docking at the Bahamas to look forward to.

  • Haha. All you see is a wall of black. No joke. You hear the water and feel the wind but see nothing, and it feels like you can almost reach out and touch your hand to it. Pretty creepy.

  • Omg. LOVE the feeling of waking up at dawn with nothing but ocean and sky as far as the eye can see to greet me. So amazing.

  • How does the view look at night?

    Shitty Scary i guess....especially when its a no-moon night
