Actually, what we could do is play by the same rules that we demand other countries follow. That and stop supporting brutal dictators around the world. Obama is showing that he is willing to apply basic human rights standards to his own country, something no other recent U.S. president has done. This will ultimately be a huge step forward in the progress of civilization. Unfortunately loons like Rush and Beck have no interest in the advancement of civilization.

Even people who like Obama, which is still probabably a solid majority, have to admit that his speaches really are boiler plate political pap.

Charles' comment about women's rights is the best part.

sissyfist, So your saying if we sent food and supplies to a dictator he would give it to the people? And if sanctions were lifted the resources imported would go to improve the living situation of the people? Not Saddams way of controlling people! He kept his people poor and weak. Oh yeah and he killed millions of them. All resources fueled his goverment! You call me ignorant? sissyfist, like I said you have know idea what your talking about!

How is that what I am saying? I am saying starving children makes them and their families a whole lot easier to control. And check your facts, Saddam did not kill millions of his own people. Also Iraq was not the poor, miserable nation you make it out to be. In spite of the sanctions, many parts of Iraq, including Baghdad, still managed to have a modern, secular existence. Your lack of knowledge regarding Iraq is astounding.

By most sources, Saddam has killed between 300,000 and 600,000 of his own people. The U.S. imposed sanctions killed between 300,000 and 500,000 Iraqi children. And operation "enduring freedom" has killed over 100,000 civilians. little wonder that many Iraqis compare us negatively to Saddam. You don't fight a dictator by becoming one, sorry. I am no Saddam apologist, but only a fool would look at what we did in Iraq and call it good.

I am on the side of humanity. I support uplifting and building civilization, not tearing it down through thoughtless violence. I hold my country which I love to extremely high standards, and Bush's war in Iraq failed those standards miserably. If you love America you should hold it to high standards also, and not ever accept what happened in Iraq as a good thing, because that makes it that much easier for a future administration to repeat the same mistake.
