Narrations are not important here, but I liked Kondrashin's joke during the rehearsal with Gilels, who mentioned that some parts of Tchaikovsky concerto are "too vertical" and Kondrashin replied - "you mean we're not playing together here?" ;)
Cliburn's playing is from the 1st Tchaikovsky competition!

This man's last concert was somewhat awful. I don't mean the music but the circumstances around: He replaced a nervous Tennstedt (who suddenly declined conducting). Kondrashin, as a true Maestro, rehearsed the 1st Mahler's symphony in just 4 HOURS (!) and he really succeeded, but he passed away some hours after the concerto in the hotel. As any Russian musician, he is not valued as he deserves.

Many thanks for this video! Is it taken from the documentary quoted by Sviatoslav Richter in his "Souvenirs"? Is it possible to see the whole documentary? Is there any video of concerts or rehearsals of Kondrashin conducting symphonic music? Considering how carefully he regarded pedagogy, it is a pity that neither the Russian Radio, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bolshoi Tiatr, nor his son, Piotr Kondrashin, seem to be involved in such diffusion!

i grew up with music from richter, gilels, lupu, oistrach, kondraschin, van cliburn, rostropovich, tretjakov. i love all these legendes. only victor tretjakov and radu lupu we still have. god save them in order to make us happy with their unique interpretations.
