"The Art of Body Movement, pt. 2", 1970. Shot on 16mm film.
The Art of Body Movement" documents Barbara Mettler leading children, teenagers, and adults in a program of creative dance improvised before an audience at the Tucson Creative Dance Center.
Barbara Mettler, dancer, dance educator, author, and film and video producer, developed her own style of modern dance, which emphasized improvisation. Her core principles were beauty, freedom, and democracy. Dance was conceived as a fundamental human activity, of which all people are capable, as opposed to an elite, choreographed, performance art.
The Barbara Mettler Archive came to Hampshire College in 2003. For more information: mettlerdance.hampshire.edu
