2010 Mochi Pounding

Mochitsuki (mochi-pounding) is one of the traditional activities of the new year in Japan. We eat mochi to give strength, give good luck, good health and long life.

One or two people pound the mochi with KINE(big hammer) while another person turns the mochi in the USU (big mortar) between the pounds and sprinkles some water on it.

  • @Richarditong there are machines now that do the whole process. but watching the traditional way is sooo inspiring, funny, and exciting.

  • There has to be an easier way to do this. Keeps tradition alive though, which is cool.

  • It was a very funny event, i hope to see it next year again.
