I first heard "Make My Cot Where The Cot-Cot-Cotton Grows" on a recording by Robert Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders, and immediately fell in love with its great chord sequence, melody and words. It was originally recorded, I believe, by Red Nichols in 1927. I'm playing it here in G (Crumb's version is in C) - vocal chorus, instrumental chorus and vocal chorus to finish. There's an introductory verse - played in the middle of the Robert Crumb version - which I've omitted. The tune was written by Jack Le Soir, Ray Doll and Sol Klein. The guitar I'm playing is a mid-size jumbo ("No. 18") made by luthier Ian Chisholm (http://www.ianchisholm.co.uk/lutherie/Lutherie.html)

A simple fingerstyle jog through the chords is up and about, with music and tab, on my website at:

  • I can understand why you enjoy playing this! Nice one!! Best wishes, Dave

  • nice voice! I really like your voice :)

  • Just delighted to find you doing this one, which I became acquainted with through that Red Nichols version that you mention. It does have a marvelous chord progression, which you negotiate so nicely -- and your voice suits the lyrics!

  • beautiful

  • Well......You made my day.....It's been a long time since I heard this played on the guitar....since 1964 to be exact.......Thank you.......My Father would be thrilled.......It was his favorite......He wrote the lyrics at age 26.....

  • You might like the tune "Sitting Right Under The X In Texas" - I first heard it from Johnny Gimble,at a Playboys gig, then he recorded it, then Red recorded it and had a minor hit. Kind of the same theme tune...good luck to you from the Great Southwest.

  • I like to hear you sing the tunes. Nothin' to hard, but with good taste.

  • Wonderful! I must try to play that!

  • Thanks Will. I really enjoyed that!!

  • Very Nice thank you for the pleasure.
