Guitar cover of "Song 2" by Blur from their self-titled album Blur

Two separate audio guitar tracks were recorded for this video. The first track includes the introductory and verse guitar parts of the song. I struggled to emulate the original sound and ended up using a very modest amount of virtual sustain and delay on a clean amp setting. For the chorus guitar track I used a basic sixties blues amp setting.

Blur are an English alternative rock band. Formed in London in 1989 as Seymour, the group consists of singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree. Blur's debut album Leisure (1991) incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegazing. Following a stylistic change—influenced by English guitar pop groups such as The Kinks, The Beatles and XTC—Blur released Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995). As a result, the band helped to popularise the Britpop genre and achieved mass popularity in the UK, aided by a famous chart battle with rival band Oasis dubbed "The Battle of Britpop".

In recording their follow-up, Blur (1997), the band underwent another reinvention, showing influence from the lo-fi style of American indie rock groups. "Song 2", one of the album's singles, brought Blur mainstream success in the US. The last album featuring Blur's original lineup, 13 (1999) found the band members experimenting with electronic music and gospel music, as Albarn wrote more personal lyrics. In May 2002, Coxon left Blur during the recording of their seventh album Think Tank (2003). Containing electronic sounds and more minimal guitar work, the album was marked by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and African music. After a 2003 tour without Coxon, Blur did no studio work or touring as a band, as members engaged in other projects. In 2009 Blur reunited, with Coxon back in the fold, for a series of successful concerts. (Wikipedia, July 2011)

Thanks very much for viewing and commenting, I really appreciate it - Ron

  • hey great cover but I have a question. in that chord you play for the first time at 16 seconds of video is the sixth string on the air?

  • @TheMrVermillion

Thanks for viewing. The second power chord (at 0.16) is supposed to be(D#) which I'm playing as x.1.1 (the 6th string is muted). Lots of people play this song using drop D tuning. Since I didn't I couldn't play a full D# power chord at the low end so I'm basically stroking the A1 and D1 strings without the root D# on the E string. Hope that makes sense - Ron

  • Yes Man!!! It's FUCKING CORRECT!!! This song realy plays like: 1.3.3 - x.1.1 - 4.6.6 - 6.8.8 - 8.10.10

  • @PlayWithMetallica

Thanks for viewing dude. Thats the way I play it because I did not tune down a half-step. That's why in the chorus, which to my ear sounds better at the low end, the second power chord (D#) is played as x.1.1. With standard tuning you cannot play a full D# power chord so I'm basically stroking the A1 and D1 strings without the root D# on the E string. Hope that makes sense - Ron

I'll have to get a decent camera and audio recorder before I film more covers. But, Christmas is right around the corner, so maybe I can get some good deals. Or work some extra hours. :P
