Chiang Rai Rocket Festival 2009, Thailand

This yearly festival was held on May 1 at Nong Luang, a large wetlands/lake area approx. 17 km to the southeast of Chiang Rai. The villagers in the area are all from Issan so they brought their customs with them to Chiang Rai. The rocket festival traditionally is held to bring rain and for fertility. (Look for the dancing women in the video and notice what they are holding.) Lots of fun although a bit lax when it comes to safety. Look for a large number of cigarettes in the video as well.
