There is a no weapons sign at the Oakland County records building, which is illegal under the preemption law, MCL 123.1102. 123.1102 Regulation of pistols or other firearms.

Sec. 2.

A local unit of government shall not impose special taxation on, enact or enforce any ordinance or regulation pertaining to, or regulate in any other manner the ownership, registration, purchase, sale, transfer, transportation, or possession of pistols or other firearms, ammunition for pistols or other firearms, or components of pistols or other firearms, except as otherwise provided by federal law or a law of this state.

There was a soldier waiting for some paperwork who instantly caught my comment about registration and the German .gov. He chuckled at it. I thanked him for his service as I left.

Dialogue below.

Clerk: Can I help you sir?
Me: Probably. I have to register a pistol, it'd German, so I figured I should.
Clerk: OK, what kind is it; semi, revolver...
Me: Semi.
Me: I noticed you have a "No Weapons" sign out there, do you know that it is illegal?
It's preempted
Clerk: Well, we don't have no weapons in here; You'd be suprised how many people come in here with them.
Me; I know, because it's preempted.
Clerk: Ok you're all set.
Me: Thet's ...it?
Clerk: That's it, you're done.
Me: I'd never bought one with a CPL before; with that form, so I really didn't know how it worked.
Clerk: Yep, you're all set, you have a great day.

To the soldier : Me: Thank you for your service sir,
Soldier : Thank you.
Me : I really do appreciate it.

  • Thats not a weapon, thats a .22 (JK) lol

  • @billydreed1 .22lr has killed more than most other calibers combined. The preferred sniping pistol for special forces is a browning silenced .22.

Its my daughters gun, she shot one first when she was 6, she's now 9.

  • They know about, and refuse to remove the illegal sign. Several have tried to have it taken down.

To register, you have to ask for a purchase permit. You take a background check, and a short quiz, then they give it to you. There are 4 cards, one for you, one for the seller, and 2 go back to the sheriffs department. You keep your copy on you for 30 days until it gets into the (unconstitutional) system, in which time the gun is permanently registered in a database.

    Hence the "German" comment.

  • @stainless1911 I know.. notice the (JK)? :))

  • Interesting, so they have a sign that is a) unlawful and b) not enforced. I realize that she didn't really acknowledge your statement about the sign at all. Did you do any follow up regarding it - like call and speak to a supervisor or send written notification? What did the registration process consist of?
