On 5th December 2011, International Volunteer Day, Gorta very rightly recognises the work carried out by volunteers all across the world. On behalf of Gorta's Board and staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers for their unwavering support and commitment to Gorta.
The past numbers of years have been difficult for this country as we deal with an unprecedented economic crisis. All across Ireland, people have been affected in different ways and this of course, has had a ripple effect on our work as a charity. However, it is vital to remember that while this is ongoing, there are still almost one billion people going hungry in the world. It is a frightening fact, a fact that presents an enormous challenge to us all.
Our driving force in Gorta is to find innovative solutions to the causes of hunger and to do this an ambitious fundraising strategy is necessary. At the very root of this strategy is our successful network of charity shops across Ireland, with our ten shops at the very heart of communities. This network simply could not operate successfully without the dedication of all of our volunteers.
To conclude, I would like to thank all of our volunteers most sincerely for their time, energy and enthusiasm. Their contribution to this organisation can never be underestimated and with their support, we can continue to grow, and continue to change lives.
