What's even more sad is what the song was written for. In Faust the character who sings this- Gretchen- has just drowned her illegitimate child and is singing to the corpse. Obviously she has gone mad. This is because Faust and Mephistopheles (IE the devil) have destroyed her life. Look up Goethe's Faust, and then- if you can find Randy Newman's whole Faust album. It's all very deep.

I've been stressed over various situations and tonight, I decided I needed to have a good cry. So I uploaded this and it did the trick. Thank you so much for posting it, Mr. Divot! :)

The best thing the portrayed character could have done was to make sure the baby ended up in a good place. Two hundred dollars was the right price.
The sand man being sung about was coming for her. That $200 bought her a ticket on the sand mans train. She ODd on that fix and died. She was on the tracks with no chance of getting out of the way

I remember hysterically bawling when this episode was on back in high school. I can't believe I found the video on here! Thanks so much for posting.

I so remember this scene. It was the first time I ever heard of addicts selling babies. Freaked me out. This is the early SVU.

wasn't there another song that Patty sang while in the jail. I remember her singing a song that made me cry and there was the window glass with bars or the wire through. or am I just imagining that? It was about her adopting the baby out. I only remember watching this show a few times, but I did see this episode and I was hooked.

Lousy bitch sold her baby for $200. Why? Didn't she ever hear of adoption?

This is a great scene and a great song, but you sort of kill it with your description. I watched this when it aired, and it was a gut-punch when the guy showed up and th transaction took place. Until that moment, you had no idea that was coming. Including it in your description kills that.

Ouch! That's all I can say. Compared to this scene, "Highway To Heaven" is almost comedic. And that's saying a lot, because there were many episodes of Highway To Heaven that made me cry like a baby. This - I couldn't even get past the first two minutes - it was more than I could take.
I'm an old Aussie with leather skin, and as hard as granit, but this got to me.....had to give my young lads a hug after this...

I watched this at work on the computer during break. I couldn't think straight the rest of the night. Then I showed some friends of mine the same video the next day and they couldn't sit through it they thought it was so corny. I suppose you just can't make people have the same emotional reaction. I'm enough of a snob to think that some people are just more sensitive than others, though.
