I was unable to hear the sound after booting my macbook on ubuntu 10.04. But when I tried it on an ordinary pc it worked! So I thought of using my usb speaker and it worked!

I have been having this issue for a long time, and have still not been able to fix it. Every forum has the "=mbp55" in it. This never works. Ugh! The red light from the headphone jack comes on and on randomly, too.
