Instead of new type of object, why don't we regard it is a new type of planet. The word Dwarf Planet, makes you think of a small planet. Wouldn't Mercury be dwarfed in comparison to the Earth, so by this comparison (not the actual meaning of the word) wouldn't you regard Mercury to be a dwarf and a planet, a dwarf planet.
The problem is when you use dwarf next to the world planet, you turn it into an adjective which describes the word planet. You don't differentiate Pluto from being a planet.
