This is the 2nd video I've put up on this strange opening for Black. Let me know if you give it try or want to hear more.
See a third discussion and game analysis where I draw against a much stronger play in a simul using this opening: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Tc6899-SYA

About this opening:
There are about 60 games using this opening in the last decade in the TWIC databases. See also "The North Sea Variation of the Modern Defense" by Jim Bickford, 2007, Syzygy Publishing, Inc. (Their website has been down for some time, so search on ebay for the book).

  • I see. Yes. Although there are some corr. games at high levels with this opening. Still, for a weak player like me, I think I get confused when I try to confuse my opponent too much. : )

  • I doubt this opening is sound, but it certainly is interesting. I love your videos and I'm looking forward to more quirky openings!

  • Thanks! Define sound? : )

  • It seems unsound because I'm sure there are lines that will refute it very easily and leave white with a clear advantage. The beauty of openings like these are that your opponent has almost surely seen no theory and will not have a prepared refutation.

  • So far I haven't found easy refutations. See my recently add game with another version of this opening. It's tricky for white to get a handle on this.

  • @Changer01 Well, 1...Nh3+ 2. Kg2 (Kh1 Qf5) Qf5 and black is doing ok?

  • brilliantly played!! therfor very sound!!!

  • yeah, when the knight and the queen go forward at 3mins or some then pawn g3 threatens knight f4, so if it moves away white can take blacks queen with bishop to g5
