The watch gift is pretty smart of kobe. I think that it helped the lakers really unite around each other that year, brought them together, and they made into the final that year. For Kobe and the Lakers, that turned out to be a sound investment.
It also shows another unique similarity between Kobe an MJ, they were both willing to do whatever it took to win. In this case, after all the yrs. of hearing that its a team sport, he did something that proved to his teammates that he was down for them.
