  • 16v acceleration, 8v mid range power.

  • Precisely fruitlouip..

  • I have a vento (jetta) 8v gti and MK3 golf 16v gti, the golf is quicker, but the vento is better for overtaking and handles better, with the golf shift down and away (great fun!!) , with the vento I just set my foot to the board and she satisfingly grumbles past most things.

You can sit and argue all day what is better, but they are both solid and reliable engines and better than any jap crap!!

  • so if you fitted an 8v gearbox into a 16v, jasper, would your entire argument be void?

  • @Focusb4ufire ---- So the 0-60 time of the 8v is quicker than the 16v? I think not!

  • VW state the mk2 16v has the same torque as the 8v up to about 4000rpm....then the 16v has more, plus more BHP of course.

I owned a mk2 16v for 5 years and then tried a mate's Golf 8v not having tried one before...the 8v just felt gutless to me. Maybe my 16v was a tauter engine and his was loose. When I accelerated past 4k the 8v seemed weak where as the 16v is pulling Hard right up to 7300rpm! :)

  • 678jasper678 is right on this one, if your a 16v owner dont take offense! after all your car is the quicker one but just not until higher speeds, those extra valves dont do their bit until the pistons are really working like at 60mph+. and i agree with the point about the gearing.

  • i just love squeezing all 300 ft. lbs or torque out of the gears on my 8v 1.7 diesel :-)

  • ive got a 16v, and i know for sure that the 8v doesnt have a chance 0-60, the reason is that the 16v has more torque and more power, and as for the gear ratios u will find that 1st gear is the only gear that you will find the 8v might have an advantage but one the engine hits 4,500 it will pull hard to around 6,500 and then when you change gear again you will go back to 4,500 where the most torque is.

  • If you were to squeeze all the torque / power out of each gear the 8v owns.

The 16v is screaming for 4th gear long before the 8v.

Theres more torque / power to be had in 1st/2nd/3rd on the 8v.

Theres still a lot of power in 4th on the 8v, but eventually this levels out and the 16v will gain lost ground and over take.

The disadvantage of top end power that the 16v power comes in late which means you will each the speed limit before that advantage really is used!

  • have you heard of gear ratios?

  • Have you heard of gears?

  • The motorway scenario.

Take a 8v and 16v with similar weight and BHP.

The 8v will pull off quicker (due to greater torque at low revs) and gain ground over the 16v. It will only be from approx 60mph where the 16v starts to claw back lost ground. But does the 16v have enough power to get ahead of the 8v by the time it hits 70mph?

Really a 16v will shine over 8v at a higher speed to the legal limit!

    thus 8v are better.

  • a scirocco IS NOT a mk2....its built off the mk1 chassis, both the mk1 and mk2 sciroccos, and how do you convert to a vr6 block with nothing else???? and in a a straight line, stock for stock...the 16v will win....

  • exactly right my friend! :)

  • 8v has more low end torque pretty much like a diesel does 16 has to rev up higher in the range to get a similar torque

  • 16v doesnt actually make a difference in this environment, i live in the city and have a scirocco which is basically a mk2 golf. i originally had a 1.8 8v GTI (changed it to 2x weber DCOE's) for obvious reasons, and i upgraded to a 16v expecting the DOHC and 16valves to make a difference (same webers used), i was disappointed. i have since converted to a corrado vr6 block which is much the same.

in a race that isnt in a straight line i would put money on the 8v winning it.
