http://www.extremesailingseries.com In the fourth race on the second day of the Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 from Cowes, France's Groupe Edmond de Rothschild ploughed into Sweden's Artemis Racing at the top mark resulting in severe damage to both boats -- bad enough to end their racing for the day. A busy night in the pitlanes is expected to get them racing again tomorrow.

Artemis jib filled on starbard at 00:17, collision at 00:21. That's four seconds that Artemis was on starboard. I'm surprised Rothchild's is even protesting, let alone in such an emphatic manner.

With the new rules 18.3 is on however this does not mean rule 15 is off. Artemis can not tack there if they can't cross. Edmund de Rothschild started avoiding before Artemis reached CHC so i think Artemis would have got a DSQ. Hopefully they don't do that in the AC72s!

Watching this a third time, Artemis is definitely at fault. Rothchild attempts to duck before Artemis had even completed his tack, and was still unable to duck. Clear breach of 15 (acquiring right of way).

Correct, the only rule that is up for debate her, is whether or nor Artemis broke 15 or not.

But these aren't dinghys, they probably take a couple of seconds to respond. Room and opportunity to keep clear varies between classes.

how the crew roles are assigned varies from boat to boat. most will have a nominated tactician.

You might want to download virtual skipper. it's free and fun and you can familiarize yourself with the basic rules and strategies there too.

Thanks this is really informative and you seem to have insight in this. Do you know of any clips that highlight the racing stategy and tactics that they use in a actual race? I have always wanted to see it from that point of view since the crews have a strategist on board is that correct?

the proper course for both boats is to tack so 18.3 is not an issue (personally I think 270º rounding is more risky)

Groupe Edmond de Rothschild had no overlap when entering the mark zone therefore Artemis who was clear ahead is entitled to mark room.

Artemis completed her tack and was on a close hauled course well before the collision with Groupe Edmond de Rothschild so rule 13 does not apply. that would leave this incident as a simple rule 10 collision.
