What happens when you get a Squawkers McCaw animatronic toy on sale at Target after Thanksgiving, and wire it to a computer? Here is a very early test (not synced very well, but it's a test). Hopefully more functions to come!
If I were just moving the mouth, I could do this easier with just a few NPN transistors. But all the main body movements (wings and posture) are driven by a single motor and a series of cams. I need to have an intelligent system that interfaces with the sensors for the cams current position. Also, reversing the power for the mouth motor blinks the eye, and I need to read a sensor to tell if the eyes are closed or open.

And yes, I can put the "skin" back on and make him look normal again.

  • Since my first trip to Disney World in 1988 as a little kid, I awlays wanted my own Enchanted Tiki room (I knew they there robots, even back then). This is one step closer to that dream.

  • so, you're technically making a better squawkers? cool. I to make mine do more stuff! But first i need to fix him. I think some gears and stuff inside are jammed, but i'm afraid if i try to fix it myself i'll just make it worse. And i lost the remote.

  • awesome!! excellent job!

  • I have a squawkers that I would like to integrate with my ssc-32 and VSA software. What are the links and hookups to make this work?

  • Cool! I'm kinda starting in this robot stuff. Nice!

  • This is fantastic. I bought one when it first came out to interface to VSA, but have not yet disected it. I guess I figured it would not be as simple as separate motors/solenoids. I am guessing that is what the Basic Stamp is going to be used for. I need to skin mine and see how the cams are enhgaged. Honestly I was waiting for someone else to do the autopsy before I began cutting. - Excellent!!!!

  • Pretty amazing!!.. Have you made improvements since this video?

  • great job! what's the program that you're using?

  • You should do What is love.

  • OMG!!! I LOVE THE TIKI ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my top two favorites at Disney Land. The other is Small World. This coming from an eighteen-year-old, you're never too old for Disney.
