What's the advantage of sitting in that unnatural position, instead of just, say, the burmese position?

I have been doing Yoga a few months, and have recently managed to get myself into the lotus position. However, I can only remain in this position for about 3 minutes. I have probably been forcing myself too much, which isn't a good thing. But I am now going to try using the hip exercises which I am sure will help me .
