One thing i forgot to add. if you do decide to go to Maine for studies, The Universtiy of Maine at Fort Kent would be your best choice to practice French considering it is biligual. All the staff speaks both languages and although we all prefere speaking English you can always go the the Université de Moncton across the river on the NB side. There its opposite, they are more comfortable speaking French than English. Their University is a partner with ours, so the tutuiton is the same! à tanto!

@whateverplo Merci beaucoup pour la réponse!  I'm sorry to hear that it's so uncomfortable for everyone! Why do you think it feels like such a taboo? In any case, I've been checking out the website for UMFK and have found that it's an undergraduate institution (unless I'm wrong...?).

But if you were to talk to someone in French in Fort Kent, would they respond? Like in a store or anything?

Hé, bougre! Tu parle joliment bien! Viens nous visiter icitte dans le sud de la Louisiane! Mon, j'reste dans la Paroisse de Lafourche (dans le sud-est de l'état). Presque tous les vieux parle français dans mon village. À mon avis, Lafayette est pas la meilleure place pour parler avec les vieux, mais j'aime ça parce qu'y a beaucoup d'jeunes qui parle français là-bas. Si on devient amis sur Facebook, j'peux t'hookup avec un tas d'francophones louisianais. =)

tu pourrais probablement parler en cajun avec les personne du nouveau brunswick parce que les cajun dla louisianne sont quasiment toute les descendants du monde du nb , maine, nova scotia, pei .... CadjinGisclair dit moi si ju wrong ou pas bein jpense quon pourrais se comprendre ein? jai 19ans pi jparle pomalle comme les vieux :) vive l'acadie pi les cajun!

Je t'ai envoyé une réponse par vidéo. En fait, il faut être proactif pour apprendre une langue. Comme je souligne dans la vidéo, tu veux des moyens de pratiquer et à l'écrit et à l'oral. Cela peut se réaliser grâce à des correspondants, à des amis, à un prof privé comme moi (je donne des cours aussi par Skype). Sois surtout patient avec toi-même et amuse-toi en apprenant.

Seul autre conseil serait d'emménager près de la frontière de Québec, et t'y faire des amis francophones.

Moi j'habite à Sudbury, en Ontario. Je suis franco-ontarien, et Sudbury c'est une des deux grandes villes bilingue en Ontario. L'autre c'est Ottawa, où j'ai étudié l'université.

4. You will have the chance to encounter much more variation of the language. In Ontario, in Manitoba, in Nouveau-Brunswick, in Nouvelle Écosse etc., they all have a regional 'patoi' but in Montréal you will encounter Québecois Montréalais, North Québecois, all sorts of accents from France, haitian, arabe african and black african accents. It's a great opportunity to learn many accents in a short time. :) Good luck!

1. They have a great immigration program that you will go through that will teach you French.

2. The culture is amazing, possibly the best city in the country.

3. You will have the opportunity to learn good French. The problem with learning French in places like Maine, Louisiane or most places in Ontario is that you will be influenced by the widely spoken language in the area - English. You will find many many errors in the French spoken language that are tolerated in the area

@akropiss I live there. It's not true that everyone speaks English. Foreigners speak English, at a basic level, as well as French, but the Canadians who live here are mostly 'pure laine', in other words, they speak la langue de Molière. It is true when you are downtown you can be served in English. Anyway, I would say moving to Montréal QC would be a good idea for a few reasons:

Oh, and I forgot - we have a TON of immersion schools, but they start at kindergarden and continue until grade 12. You should come to Lafayette pour le festival internationale.
