Gem born 10/15/2009. Day two I realized there was a defect on her spine... just a little hole in the skin, and she was "failing to thrive" on her own. A visit to the vet where they sealed the hole with derma glue and said I would need to feed her. Mild the dog? I'd never considered it. But it was my job for at least the next month... every couple hours!
Here you can see that Gem was a little behind her siblings, preferring to lay, trouble staying upright... on top of balance when standing, and not able to properly suckle... her tounge would latch to the top of her mouth before she closed her mouth on the teat. I only know this because I had to fight to get the syringe into her mouth (past that tiny pink tounge) every time, no matter how hungry.
Still Gem is perfect in every way to me! Prescious beyond any amount of money, for she teaches me every day to be thankful for everything... Gem is a walking, talking miracle (dog talk that is).
Gem suffers no pain, though the vet says she has some deficits physical and neurological her life should differ little from her siblings.
I will do all that I can to repay her for each day of joy that she brings to me.
