My favourite Beethoven. Wolfgang Sawallisch and Nicolai Gedda on their 1970s recording of Schubert Lied shall remain one of my most treasured possessions. Thank you both.
This is exalted music making. The musicians play their hearts out for this amazing old man who moves orchestras by barely raising a finger. He was a true mensch creating music on such a high level that perhaps only late Furtwangler was his equal. He was a constant joy to watch in Philadelphia which was blessed to have him.
Great! it's the only performance I've heard where the brass don't rush at the fortissimo proclamatory passage (well, I'll have to check Celibidache's again tho...) but even more, in both this and his 1988 perf., also blessedly on YT, near the end where the basses are sawing back and forth from E to D#, it's SO CLEAR, unlike any others I've heard - a really awesome effect! whereas in most performances it's just kind of muddy. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this incredible musicianship!
