Protest At Israeli Consulate in Boston, March 15 07

oston, Massachusetts—A large group of Boston College students,
faculty, and others took part in a nonviolent direct action involving
elaborate street theater at the New England Israeli Consulate building
coinciding with the 4th anniversary of the killing of American peace
activist Rachel Corrie and to draw attention to the construction of
Israel's Apartheid wall and Israel's continuing illegal Military
Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip at 1PM on Thursday, March
15, 2007.

Students assumed the roles of international aid workers, Israeli
soldiers, and Palestinian civilians in a mock checkpoint to recreate
and bring to light the violence and humiliation inflicted daily upon
the people of Palestine. Students dressed as Israeli soldiers
harrassed those dressed as Palestinian civilians and prevented
international aid workers from treating the "injured." Students also
constructed a mock Israeli Apartheid wall. "Students, politicians,
and activists mobilized in the 90s to end apartheid in South Africa.
We have come here to take part in a similar struggle being waged in a
different part of the world—a form of apartheid that has endured for
decades and is manifested most violently in the form of the Apartheid
wall," said Boston College student and demonstrator Cindy Frezzo.

The Apartheid wall, often referred to as the "security barrier" or
"security fence" is in actuality an eight meter high concrete wall
(taller than the Berlin wall) under construction between Israel proper
and the West Bank and was ruled illegal by the Hague International
Court of Justice in 2004. The Apartheid wall is said to be built for
security reasons while in actuality it annexes much of the
Palestinians' natural water resources and land and many of Israel's
illegal settlements to Israel. "Since the United States is in large
part responsible for funding the construction of the Apartheid wall
and the illegal Israeli military occupation of Palestine, I feel it is
my duty to do everything in my power to end the enforcement of such
policies of apartheid," said Boston College student and demonstrator
Nic Albert.

In addition to the actions of concerned students and faculty, other
Boston residents showed their solidarity with the students and faculty
by holding signs and distributing flyers with information about
Israel's Apartheid policies and ways in which Americans can resist
here at home by boycotting US corporations doing business in Israel's
illegal settlements.

Actions will be taking place in the coming days in memory of the 4th
anniversary of the killing of American peace activist Rachel Corrie.
In 2003, Rachel Corrie, 23, of Olympia, WA, was crushed to death
beneath an Israeli military bulldozer while protesting the demolition
of the home of a Palestinian doctor in the city of Rafah in the Gaza
Strip.
