dir. Kevin James Dobson, 2005, USA, 90 min.
Based on the ongoing unsolved murders in Cuidad Juárez, Chihuahua, this film is a dark and gripping story that portrays the rigorous and dangerous lives of sweatshop workers in a border town. While on assignment, Los Angeles based reporter Karina Danes (Minnie Driver) meets Mariela (Ana Claudia Talancón), a rare survivor of one of these vicious attacks. During her recovery, Mariela sees visions of the Virgin Mary and experiences the phenomenon of stigmata, the inexplicable appearance of wounds in her palms that recall those that Christ received when he was crucified. Mariela and her story soon draw a devout following, and her sermons galvanize a public in need of hope. This film is a contemporary look at how women maquiladora workers continuously endanger their lives with the expectation of improving their living conditions. At the same time it is a compelling, moving account by director Kevin James Dobson that connects issues of politics, fanaticism and religion.

Drug cartels do it for fun. It is the same in canada. They can buy anything with their drug money so they start to look for other excitement.
