BUCKLEY BAY - A serious motor vehicle accident along the Inland Island Highway south of Courtenay sent two people to hospital and closed the highway for several hours.
Comox Valley RCMP say a 27 year-old Errington woman was southbound and was attempting to pass another vehicle when she lost control of her car. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a signpost and a cement guardrail then rolled at least three times. The car came to rest less than 100 metres short of falling down a highway overpass.
The woman was unconscious when ambulance crews arrived and had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department. The only other occupant was her 3 year-old daughter who was awake and alright due to the fact she was strapped securely into a child seat. The young girl was taken to hospital in Comox while the unidentified woman was transported to hospital in Victoria with neck and head injuries. She was transported by a medivac helicopter that landed on the highway next to the scene.
RCMP collision analysts were on the scene trying to determine exactly what caused the woman's car to leave the highway but say speed was being considered a factor in the crash.
