The first phase of the project involved GPS locating over 8,000 sanitary sewer manholes throught the city. We use survey grade GPS units to obtain highly accurate locations of each sewer manhole lid. This GPS position provides us with an accurate spatial location and elevation. The sanitary sewer study is aimed at identifying locations of inflow and infiltration. This occurs when rainwater and/or groundwater enters the sanitary sewer system, primarily during wet weather events. Black and Veatch, an engineering firm out of Kansas City, is using the data collected by Midland GIS to assist in developing models to help with future sanitary sewer expansions and to help regulate the existing sanitary sewer system.
Ultimately, this study will help the City of St. Joseph conform to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) mandated program called cMOM. cMOM stands for Capacity, Management, Operation, & Maintenance, and is intended to help a city's sewer collection system.
