The Windermere Airshow. Saturday, 24th. July, 2010!
Airshow it wasn't really! Not because of the organisation - which was obviously brilliant, but because of naff Cumbrian weather - rain and a low cloud base! - But without the rain we wouldn't be the Lake District!
I was sad not to have been able to see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and most of the planned air events! They were all there and probably as keen to fly as we were to see them, but it just wasn't safe!
As for the event! Well it rained most of the day ... that misty rain that gradually soaks you! That wasn't the organizer's fault!
But there was enought happening on the ground to keep my wife and daughter and me happy!
It's the first time we had ever been even though we live in the county! It was well organised and thought out. The video just shows some of what was on show!
But this is the best bit! ... Everyone was so friendly. And for us and our 15 year old daughter we had to pay £10 for a programme! Shock, horror you may think! But that programme allows a family to spend all day there Saturday and Sunday! That's it! £10 entertainment for two days for all the family!
Of course, it costs £5 to park for the whole day on both days so that is £20 for two whole days for the family. And then you might want to buy things and food there etc! But if you take a picnic and aren't tempted to buy much ... it is a very cheap weekend!
There were RAF stalls with some of our heroes there. It is organised by the rotary club and almost anything you buy goes to a charity from the car parking onwards! So it is all in a good cause! This year, the Rotary Club were giving the money to a local hospice and to temporary shelters of the kind that were and are still being used in Haiti after their terrible earthquake. And there were collection boxes for the RAF benevolent fund!
I'm happy to give to all of them!
I'm sad that I didn't see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, but I understood and I'd rather those chaps were safe! But disappointed? Not a bit of it! It was a truly lovely day amongst lovely, dedicated people! And rain can never dampen that! ... And I saw an iconic Huey helicopter land! That was worth £10 for me alone!
I hope that next year the weather is more favourable and all their planning can pay off! I feel sad for all those who have obviously put in so much effort!
We will be going back next year again! What a lovely and inspiring day!
