  • I don't think this is the 1936 band'If it was Ray McKinley would be in it.The drummer is orobably Buddy Schutz,I would put the date in the early '40s. besides the band sounds too powerful for the mid '30s.

  • @thekrupaman "John Silver" was indeed a hit of the Jimmy Dorsey band in early 1938 - not 1936.

  • @thekrupaman This is listed in the filmography - it was filmed mid 1938.

  • Ray McKinley played on the1938 recording. This is Buddy Shutz who joined the band in 1939 when Mckinley formed a band with Will Bradley so I would say this band is 1940.

  • "John SIlver" was composed by Jimmy Dorsey and Ray Krise. Jimmy Dorsey released the instrumental as a Decca 78 single in 1938 and on V-Disc, No. 117, and re-arranged under the title "Long John Silver" on V-Disc No. 409. The instrumental was also performed in the Abbott and Costello film Lost in a Harem with Jimmy Dorsey wearing a fez and the band wearing striped costumes.

  • jimmy's orchestra at this time ('36) fronted for the incomparable bing crosby on the kraft music hall. jimmy & tommy were drinking buddies with bing in the paul whiteman days.

  • The version on Lost in a Harem buries this one.

  • Great stuff!
