YouTubers are spreading viral videos urging people to boycott YT's advertisers, to sign petitions in order to stop YouTube from going more corporate. They want to keep YouTube solely in the hands of the average video uploader.

The thing is, they're wrong. YouTube is hemorrhaging money. Average video uploaders like me are not generating the money needed to keep them afloat. YouTube needs corporate sponsors and a new business plan if they wish to stay in operation.

"Last summer, a YouTube exec told an industry group the company was selling ads against fewer than 3% of its total views; The Wall Street Journal pegged the number at between 3% and 4%."

"YouTube users upload 15 hours of video every minute of the day; in a real sense, the company is providing bandwidth and hosting services to much of the world for free, at a cost Credit Suisse estimates at $1 million a day for bandwidth alone. Further, about 70% of YouTube's views come from outside the U.S., a much tougher sell to advertisers, and many of its premium-content deals cover U.S. audiences only. Globally, YouTube is monetizing at a much lower rate."

"According a recent report by analysts at the financial-services company Credit Suisse, Google will lose $470 million on the video-sharing site this year alone."

What do you have against bacon?!?!? :P

  • the 470 mil.. you say they will "lose" that this year... Lose..? dont you mean "not earn" that much more on top of billion they already make by cramming more and more advertising in our faces ? it amazes me that your defending CORPORATE GOUGING. Haven't you watched any news lately about wall street, corporations, bankers, heath care providers clearly pilfering the American citizens ? WTF ! This is YOU-tube.. Not Oprah-tube - if Google wants a TV channel then make one somewhere else.

I'm against corporate welfare, but am also enough of a realist to understand that if a company (and although YouTube is owned by Google, it's still a company in its own right) continually loses money, it will be shut down.

If a company could store the massive number of videos with only donations or other means to stay afloat, why hasn't any occurred yet? Even Hulu is losing tons of money.

  • Anything which takes power out of the hands of massive corporate advertisers and puts them in the hands of the average person, I am going to be for. Youtube could run on donations, or find some other way to break even. They do not need to sell themselves out to corporate advertisers just to stay alive.

And just because there are no corporate ads now doesn't mean there won't be any in the future. Most of the corp. ads right now have been 1-stared to death, because of the political climate here.

I've watched a lot of videos on YouTube, but very few of them have been corporate ones. How am I finding these regular user vids and you're not?

Also, if YouTube doesn't make a profit or at least break even, then forget anyone buying them out, they'll be out of business!

  • Yeah, but that doesn't explain how Youtube siphons views off of the average channels and puts them on the corporate mega-channels. They manipulate what gets put on the front page. If no one ultimately wants that then who benefits? Only the corporate mega-conglomerates do. Do you really want all of Youtube to be owned by Disney? Because that is the direction we are headed right now.

Plus, there is NO reason why corporate ads should obscure visibility for the average viewer.

  • Well said...
