This rap song predates both Sugarhill Gang and Fatback & King Tim III.

From a broadway musical soundtrack released on vinyl in 1978, these kids talk about the 1977 power blackout in NYC which apparently had an effect on hip hop culture up in the bronx.

  • @magicbougherra Well we're talking about the recorded music industry not what people did on the sidewalks & street alleys in their neighborhoods!

  • @musiqgem DOESN'T MEANT THE 1ST RAPPER WAS FEMALE, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ''RAPPING'' LONG BEFORE THIS, THIS IS ONE OF THE 1ST ON VINYL.

  • I hate rap, but this is much better than today's rap

  • She's got a nice flow. This is a early example of lyricism.

  • @JTKnowsMusic

Actually Caspers Groovy Ghost Show is 1980!

  • @musiqgem

even before this song came to light we had tanya 'sweet t' winley..who recorded 'vicious rap'

around the same time as King tim iii "personality jock", suagar hill gang 'rappers delight'

Kurtis Blow's 'Christmas rapping' and many other labels and artists looking to cash in on what would be

    eventually be called hiphop.

  • @tension1906

non taken..this wouldnt be called melodic as there's no melody, ita rhythmical

the rappers are rapping in a style not unlike sadat x .

it can easily be seen as an early form of rapping

  • @HolyRollerTV No disrespect, but to me, this is similar to Gil Scott Herron. Some call him the first real rapper. But, this is spoken word. Melodic, but not the same as Grandmaster Caz, the Cold Crush Brothers, Melle Mel, and the other "first M.C.s" in the hip hop game.

  • I DON'T SEE ANYONE ON HERE AKNOWLEDGING THAT THIS ALSO MEANS THAT THE FIRST RAPPER WAS A FEMALE!!!
