Ryan Westmoreland returned to the baseball diamond Tuesday night, not to play, but continue his recovery from a cavernous malformation in his brain stem.
Westmoreland, a former Red Sox 5th round draft pick, was back with his old team the Lowell Spinners Tuesday playing soft toss in the afternoon before the game.
The 20-year-old was then introduced to the crowd who gave him a rousing ovation.
Westmoreland will not play again this year, but he will continue rehab in Lowell for a couple more days and then travel to Greenville to spend the last days of the minor league season with the Greenville Drive.
Westmoreland was diagnosed in March with a cavernous malformation of cavernoma which is a cluster of abnormal or dilated blood vessels that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms can include bleeding in the brain, seizures and headaches.
