This is it - the grand diva herself performing what has been acclaimed as the greatest Northern Soul song of all time in the history of the genre. I recently posted a much newer version I did of the same song by girl twins, Ham and Reem. Ham and Reem were brought to me in the year 2000, by Nick Raymonde, from RCA records. They were, then, a pair of identical seventeen year old black girl twins from Birmingham, and Nick and I had been talking about finding a fresh faced, new, young act to do some Northern Soul, and Nick chose some classic songs, one of which was this timeless wondrous song, originally recorded by Tobi Legend, who was really the famous Detroit soul singer, Tobi Lark, (also well known for "Happiness Is Here"), on the Mala label, and acclaimed by many as one of the greatest Northern Soul songs of all time, and one of the famous "three before eight" at the legendary Wigan Casino. So massive was the popularity of this song, that Pete Waterman even covered it on Kylie Minogue in the 1980s. Anyway, after watching the video of them a few times, I realised I had to dig out our magnificent video of the original singer. We had filmed her and re-recorded her in early 1999, a few months before launching "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" at Blackburn in front of 1300 people. And of course it was this particular performance that brought the house down, and got a standing ovation. I tried to get Tobi to come over in person to appear, but she didn't want to know. It seems that this one time that we filmed her, by those glorious huge fountains, on the border of Detroit and Canada, was the only time we got to see this true legend. Dressed to kill, and performing for posterity, I marvel that we were able to achieve what Wigan Casino spent nearly ten years unsuccessfully trying to do - to locate the mysterious and enigmatic Tobi Legend herself, and getting her, just one time and one time only, to perform this true classic.

This song takes me back to the last moments of dancing and grabbing your bag to get home on the train from Wigan. Remember oldies-night and the nicotine and sweat dripping off the ceiling. Feeling everyone was your pal. Classic days. x
Try again. Can anyone remember when they started playing this at the end of the night? It definately wasn'played in the first couple of years. My guess is 76/77, anyone?

Like going back in a time machine to 78 - 81...main hall memories.
