This is a beautiful Indonesian folk song with a very curious and controversial history.
It started as an ordinary Javanese folk song singing about genjer, an aquatic vegetable that grows wild and a food for the poor people of Indonesia. In the mid 60s it was picked up and sung by the then left wing artists of Indonesia.
After the still mysterious coup by the Military against President Sukarno, some said supported by the PKI (Communist Party of Indonesia), this song was banned by the New Order of the Suharto Regime for almost 32 years.
After the fall of Suharto is 1998, this song is being sung again. For most Indonesians, it is still a mystery while it was banned because the subject matter is so apolitical and mundane.
Genjer, Genjer
Genjer-genjer, Nong kedok'an pating keleler
Genjer-genjer, Nong kedok'an pating keleler
Emak'e tole, teko-teko mbubuti genjer
Oleh sak tenong, Mungkor sedot seng tole-tole
Genjer-genjer, Saiki wis digowo muleh
Genjer-genjer, Isuk-isuk didol neng pasar
Genjer-genjer, Isuk-isuk didol neng pasar
Dijejer-jejer, diuntingi, pada didasar
Dijejer-jejer, diuntingi, pada didasar
Emae' Jebreng
Pada tuku nggowo welasan
Genjer-genjer saiki wis arep diolah.
