I worked with Merce Cunningham in the fall of 2006 as the on stage camera operator for "TV RERUN" 1972. The Merce Cunningham Student Repertory Company attempted to recreate the 1972 dance with elements Merce envisioned in 1972 but the tecnology did not exist yet.

The camera operator was free to move about the stage, the 'Front' of the dance was to rotate to face the camera operator.

In the original work the sound was produced by radio rececivers worn by the dancers that changed the sound in relation to the dancers location on stage.

  • Fabulous use of movement and projection. Love the three layers of performance - live, live feed and shadow. Very interesting stuff.

  • This was a wonderful experience. Merce is one of the greats, working for him, I was struck by how much he empowered me, I felt like a collaborator, despite my limited experience.

  • This piece was first developed in 1972. Merce was ahead of the technology and it was not until 30 years later did the technology become available to fulfill his vision.

  • Wow, i go to a school of the arts in New Zealand for dancing, we learn Merce Cunningham there, his movement is so strong, and abstract, i love doing work by him, and Martha Graham, both ledgands!! :)
