Not going to lie, when I saw Verna immediately drive away from the two of them, I was waiting for a surprise twist where Tom and Leo are killed just when they think they've won. I was surprised at how they ended it. But the more I watch this scene, the more glad I am that they chose to end it this way.

tru dat @astronaughty03 "you always know why you do things leo?" I don't...guess i'm like tom 2.

What was it? I felt Tom loved Leo, Leo was like a son to Tom and Leo was like a father to Tom. Yet Tom felt too strongly about Verna to ever have anything to do with either of them again by the end of the film, especially since Leo was set to marry Verna. So tragic, so beautiful. The sadness in Gabriel's eyes at the end of the film is just heartbreaking.

i don´t think tom wanted to work for leo since vera would slowly start to take control over leos buisnies once they get married, and tom and vera arent exactly BFF

What's the rumpus, Leo?

Jezus, Tom!
Many people who I've recommended this to ask me about this ending. Tom knew it wasn't going to be like it was as Leo kept saying he knew it would. There was too much between Tom and Vernor for Tom to just go back into their lives while they were married. In the end, Tom let himself be alone. After all, he had no heart. Great story and one of the most underrated gangster movies with quick and intelligent dialogue.

@Madman007 Even deeper is that bit that Tom, like Verna said makes a point of being a sonofa bitch which delves from pride through self loathing, finding himself to be a burden on others, one of the only if not THE only people he cares about is Leo so he drives Leo away if not only for the sake of saving Leo from his own troubles. People like me and Tom were meant to be alone.
