I finally had a chance to ride the recent V&T extension to Carson City, as all the tickets were sold out last year. McCloud Railway 2-8-2 #18 does the honors for pulling the excursion to Virginia City.

  • What is overmann pit?

  • @generationll: Overman pit was an open pit mine that destroyed the V&T right-of-way, and was considered a major obstacle for the extention to Carson City. You can see the fill, the retaining wall, and the depth of the pit between 4:54 and 5:35.

  • Is # 18 The only steam loco they have to do these excursions?

  • @HunterR909: Last year, 2-8-0 #29 pulled the excursions. I was told by the crew that #18 can pull more cars, so they prefer that over the #29, which I assume still runs.

  • @cchan006 Also, don't forget the government agency out of Carson City rebuilt the line from Gold Hill down to far-far-East Carson City. They also own #18. The private V&T leases #18, and owns #29. It's better for them to run the leased engine and put the wear and tear on that.

Very nice video, you have caught the flavor of this ride. You also skipped the boring part, the first half. It's only after tunnel 2 that it gets interesting.

Nice editing, nice video quality. Nice shot at Gold Hill

  • @virginiatruckee: Thanks for your insightful comments. I didn't record video for the first half, because I chased #29 and recorded videos of that part last year.

  • I sure hope that 18 and 29 double head some day.

  • Thanks you, Videos very nice,

  • @cchan006 Overman pit is currently owned by Comstock Mining (ticker:LODE). They own the processing plant in American Flat and a lot of land in Silver City and American Flat. They say they will go into production soon.

I call it the "Overmoney" Pit, because that pile of dirt was the most expensive part of the rebuild, at several million dollars.

  • Great Video Newman

  • NICE VIDEO,

  • Nice video! I got to get out there to take some photos.

  • Wow, that is a huge fill through Overman Pit!

  • Hi guys many thanks for your posting this one is one of the best. The area in winter I believe would be covered in snow. The running gear and #18 is in pristine condition. Good job . 5/5
