Feodor Chaliapin Sings 'La Calunnia' from Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" for Victor in 1926. Nice performance indeed.

Played on my HMV 102 with Laubscher needle. At the end of this video, I have a surprise for the viewers!

  • @ChrisStockslager It's a British Pathe newsreel from 1927, and yes, he is actually recording this aria.

  • I've heard Italian singers who understood this less than this Russian. This is not just magnificent singing, it is world-class comic acting, with every word and expression given its full value. Matchless,literally matchless - this is one of my favourite arias, and I have never heard it half as well performed.
