@Shindai athletic tape, when wrapped around the toes, is to prevent blisters. what he is explaining in this video he is teaching the class that you need proper technique to execute this kick properly. you'll notice how he tells you not to over rotate when doing back kick (or else it becomes a hook kick) , spin + square up then release the kick utilizing your hip and pushing with your base foot.. towards the end he shows variations of chambering the kicking leg

I think this helps to demonstrate also the inside kicks in Naihanchi. The whipping motion, spin, and power follow through all speak of it's ancestry in Shuri. This Sensei is excellent, for JKA.
