Played this on a Roland FP5. Silent Night was written by Franz Gruber & Joseph Mohr for guitar accompaniment. According to legend, the St. Nicholas church organ was defunct and music was needed for the evening service. A poem written in 1816 by Mohr and a melody by organist Gruber were joined to create a song that would have a guitar accompaniment. First performed for the Christmas Eve midnight service on December 24, 1818 and was later forgotten until 1825 when Carl Mauracher was rebuilding the organ at St. Nicholas and found a handwritten copy of the words and music in the organ loft.
Silent Night is likely the most recognized spiritual Christmas song, while White Christmas is the most recognized secular Christmas song.
