A Night in Venice is an example of a great musical score married to a poor libretto. The Comic Opera Guild filed a theatrical divorce in this 1989 revision by Thomas Petiet of the Comic Opera Guild. Discarding the confusing original book, the new plot centers on Barbara, the wife of Senator DelAqua and the circumstances that make Ciboletta, DelAquas mistress and Annina, a fishseller, disguise themselves as Barbara to meet the amorous Duke. Although the video quality is flawed, the performances justify viewing. In this scene, the Duke (David Troiano) discovers that there are two Barbaras (Jane Schoonmaker Rodgers and Penny Kindraka), and decides that he may get twice as lucky. Caramello (Robert Breault) decides to break up their romantic dinner disguised as a cook. For more comic operas and operettas, visit comicoperaguild.org.
