Belugas are social creatures and need interaction for their mental health. It's not uncommon for intelligent creatures to resort to ANYTHING that gets a reaction from ANYTHING. It's desperate and sad. Believe it or not, the Seattle Aquarium used to have an octopus that would do things like this, then watch for a reaction. I've always wondered if it was frightened and reacting, or just bored out of its boneless skull. Octopuses are very intelligent. So are squid and cuttlefish. Tragic.
