The I Am project asks youth activists to wear a T-shirt for one year that states their name. The wearers join a youth activism programme that seeks to bring about change through local initiatives. The project was started by Daniel Joshua Cullum from New Zealand after a simple challenge from a friend: to wear an "I am Dan" T-shirt for a whole year.
Cullum not only took up the challenge, but used it as a method to raise funds for an initiative to build a water tank in Tanzania. The initiative was successful, but when the year ended and it came time for Cullum to take off his T-shirt, more than 70 friends said they were ready to take up the challenge. The "I Am" project was born. Since then, the project has expanded to nine countries, bringing youth together in each to make social change.
The challenges facing the project are how to make it culturally relevant in each locality; and how to bring structure and process to the way it manages oversight for investment projects.
