This is the only version of this Intermezzo I like (I liked Gilels's as well, but this one is my definitive favourite). It's really hard to interprete what's on the score, and much of what I heard around it's simply awful and ridiculous. Thanks for posting, very enlightning!
My introduction to the late Brahms piano pieces was through the recordings by Alexeev, and I think he still sets the standard on these works overall. On this piece in particular, he's the only performer whose characterization matches the tempo indication, "Andante con grazia ed intimissimo sentimento."
It is really the best interpretation I heard! Fantastic!
