Grow mass amounts of algae and produce 20,000+ gallons of bio-fuel on one acre. With the amount of farm space of 1/10 the size of New Mexico we could produce enough fuel to fill the United States' need for oil.

  • Wow, this guy is awesome.

  • 1/20th of the water. How important is respiration during the 24 hour production cycle? Will Canada purchase most of the biodiesel produced?

  • GLEN KERTZ FOR SECRETERY OF ENERGY 2012!!! In fact have him replace half of the white house! Get on board with Algae or get the hell out of the way! Progress for the good of all man is trying to get through!!!

  • just another greedy exploiter. joke remember exploiting something or a situation is not a bad thing. read a dictionary.

  • hail Glen Kurtz. This guy's saving the World!

  • @hablerz one of the beauties of algae is that it is useful in many applications. for food grade algae, which will of course be the most expensive to produce, contamination would be too high a risk. For that application it is more likely that a system with less "tight squeezes" and a more open pool design, or an enclosed reactor for collection of the decomposition gasses. Waste processing is just one of the many uses for algae. We could really convert off of fossil fuels now.

  • The oil from algae is the same as any other plant oil in its essential function. there are several ways to separate the oil from the biomass. ppl who would want to troll on this idea, or be "negatively skeptical" will have missed the boat on this one. algae is incredibly efficient as an organism, and also more easily monitored in its growth. we can eat it, livestock can eat it, it can be grown on unfarmable land, can be used as biomass fuel directly OR as an oil product.

  • why do they use synthetic nutrients when thye could just use sewerage? . Keeping the inputs down should be a primary concern.

Right now the USA pumps billions of tons of swerage into the sea when its prime plant food.

Since Algae fuel would not be entering the food chain, using sewage would create many synergies and cut costs further.
