Faced with massive budget cuts after paying for all of Gordon Brown's PR stunt in summits in the UK, the Met police are looking for useful idiots to become hobby bobbies, part time police that get paid nothing at all, whilst the "real" police rake it in on pay, and fraudulent overtime charges.

Recorded from BBC London News, 05 February 2010.

  • I'm sorry, did she just say that she got a buzz out of dragging someone out of a club or pub?

    Who guards the guards?

  • To the idiot who posted this: the specials have the same powers as paid cops. They CHOOSE to give up their free time to make a difference. And taxpayers' money isn't being spent on them. So what the FUCK are you moaning about?

You complain about real officers raking it in, and in the same sentence moan about cops who do the same job for free. Get a life

  • @SuperFairguy actually taxpayers money does go into Specials. There are lots of other costs incurred to keep a Special in place.

  • Eligibility

Specials come from all walks of life and usually no formal qualifications are required. You need to be a European Economic Area citizen (or have unrestricted right to remain in the country), and you must be at least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit, although due to the nature of the role, applicants must be reasonably fit and in good health. Both health and fitness are assessed during the recruitment process.

    scary stuff!

I like how they refer to them as "Specials".
