Iannis Xenakis compostion Diamorphoses for 2-track tape & at least 4 loudspeakers. Taken from the Adventures In Sound compilation on EL Records.
The sound-world Xenakis designed for this work combines the violent noises of jet engines, trains, and an earthquake with high bell-like sounds. The contrasting character of these sonic layers interacts with shifting densities and successions of events to produce a complex, yet balanced form. The equilibrium of high, sharply defined sounds and low, continuous ones is made manifest in the overall architecture; the outer passages are dominated by the roaring, sustained sounds framing a central section of more discontinuous, shifting textures of bells and many other sonorities.

  • I think Such a musical genius as Xenakis deserves better than a flame war -perhaps a certain inability to get past the unusual nature of Xenakis' art brings forth unintended associations with violence and interpersonal conflict -but to my mind, given my years of listening to, and assimilating, this music -it is the music of the spheres -a pristine and exhilarating astral projection through worlds beyond imagining!

  • Describing this as music produces expectations born of lifelong experience of more conventional genres. The expectations conflict with what Xenakis presents, generating negative comments that reflect more on the narrow unenlightened state of the commenter than on the quality of the work. I prefer to sidestep the encumbrances of associations and preconceptions by thinking of it as sound sculpture, and as such a different sort of art to explore and learn to appreciate.

  • @icslook man....this is like, one of the worst things I've read on Youtube in a long time.

  • I can just sit back and enjoy this - it is fantastic and so inspirational.

  • @MrChirpsky

ANY TOPIC ON EARTH bringsforth "interpersonal conflict" - if it exists, there are flame wars about it. Quit being so dense, and become a little wider :p

  • Xenakis develops an art of exploring the inner substance of sound to reach and express its sprit in the poetry of music. This is the sign of the great artists.

  • Sublime

  • Fantastic.
