  • This is precisely why I've given up on becoming a teacher. I have taught and would teach in this way, but it is frowned upon by the system. That principal's attitude is now entrenched in so many schools, and fighting it is futile since teachers have no power. I do informal science education, but since education is not the goal of the public schools I am never taken up on offers to give programs. I think teachers are afraid an outsider would reach their students in a way they never could.

  • Actually, some of this is from a short chapter from JOYS of TEACHING: They Touched My Life. This class went on to Jr.High and they VP there said as he visited classrooms he could tell my kids because they were self-confident, self-motivated, creative, and accepted responsibility for their actions. It's not rocket science, just respectful teaching.

    Really good story.

  • OMG you brought tears to my eyes. What a great teacher. This is exactly what children need! This principle seems very robotic and rigid.

  • you are a great teacher. i hope no one has ever convinced you otherwise..

  • but they were still enthusiastic about learning and thinking sounds like she was into that outcome based education crap

  • I agree with your on how science should be learned. Imagine trying to teach philosophy by reading from a text book with litte dialog between students and teacher. Besides, your students weren't being unruly, they were being 11 year old kids who found learning science to be fun. By rigidly adhering to a lesson plan, teaching and learning becomes mundane. Science definately requires critical thinking but critical thinking is not encouraged in our public schools, through grade 12 anyway.
