I'm driving cross country from my home in Los Angeles to Cambridge for a journalism fellowship at Harvard. Since I love diving, I decided I try to dive all the sinkholes, quarries and lakes I could get to along the way. Thought I'd share them with you for a different view of the USA.

Here's my first: a sinkhole just 12 miles south of Roswell, New Mexico -- despite a silty gypsum bottom, this spring fed "lake" has a lot to see--including a bold, little green sunfish--ready to take me on for invading his hood.

  • Mr. Sites: You are lucky, you did not end up in Carlsbad NM. The lakes are an extension of the caverns. A lady committed suicide back in the 50's by driving her pick up off the cliff from the top of the hill by the main lake. In the 60's a UFO fell into lake McMillan. In their search for the UFO, they found the ladies pick up. Scientist believe had the truck not lodged into a crevice. It would have gone to Carlsbad. Almost a hundred miles from the Lakes. Your very lucky. Dave K
